Right as I snapped this picture, some lady decided to indulge her curiosity as to whether the seats of this Polaris Slingshot were made of some waterproof material, and what that would feel like. On one hand, it’s not really doing any harm, and it’s kind of not the same as touching the interior on a normal car. She just patted it. On the other hand, one of the number one “don’t do’s” of car shows is to touch someone else’s ride without permission. Actually, make that anywhere. So which do you guys think it is?

I wouldn’t mind someone touching my car at a show if their hands are clean, but don’t pour soda on it. Stupid people.

True. I wouldn’t mine either, because my car isn’t any sort of show car. Feeling is fine. Fiddling is not.

You feel like she should keep her filthy hands to herself.
I get that it’s different and “open” but would she want someone reaching through her car window to feel up her seats?
That said, if I were the owner I would probably develop a “meh, whatever” mindset as long as people didn’t start climbing into it.
Is this the one in NOVA? I say “the one” but I see one on 495 once a week that is the same color, figured there can’t be a ton of them around.

The only appropriate car viewing pose. You can lean over as far as you dare, but NEVER ANY HANDS! Unless the owner is there and says its cool.

“Ma’am, can I touch you?”
“No”
“Why Not?”
“Because that’s inappropriate.”
“Now you know how the car feels.”

I personally wouldn’t mind. I don’t think that someone willing to drive around in a Slingshot would either, but it’s still not hers.

Nowhere near NOVA.

ah, the BMW next to it looked like a VA plate. Nevermind. :)

The other pose, which I tend to adopt:

NE plate.

Always respect the sanctity of somebody else’s ride. Even if I had one of these crazy things, and I saw somebody touching it, I would not be pleased. No use confronting them about it unless it’s particularly egregious, but I wouldn’t like it. I extend the same courtesy to everybody else out there.
Of course, if they ask, that’s an entirely different story.

Ugh, this bothers me so much. I’ve always known not to touch another persons car, and when I see it happen, it gets to me a bit. Obviously this is a less extreme example where I just sort of think “oh, come on...”, but I’ve seen people duck under a rope, open a door, and sit in it. When the owner saw them and raised hell it got pretty interesting....

Everyone should have to ask permission, because everyone likes it when they hear “Can I touch it,” amirite?

If it was mine, I’d be bothered.
I wouldn’t be bothered by her wanting to touch it, and if she asked I’d let her touch. Hell, I’d even let her sit in it and maybe give her a ride!
But touching my things without permission? Definite no-no.

For me, it depends - you can touch, but not too much. You can climb in, but please don’t start pressing buttons and moving switches. And hey there kids, what are you doi- DON’T MOVE THAT STICK YOU’LL DAMAGE THE CA- crunch.
That once happened when I was at a VW show - kids scrambling all over a Polo GTi and wrenching the gear lever back and forwards.

I don’t think it is as a big deal as someone touching lets say a f40 or something worth 50x the amount of a slingshot. The Slingshot is sort of a novelty “car” in the first place, its something that normal people would be more curious to check out compared to something only car buffs know about.

Yeah I was more concerned about the open bottle of Mountain Dew in her hands

It’s the equivalent of touching the seat on a parked motorcycle. It’s kinda odd, but not really. Was the owner anywhere remotely close?

Not that I could tell

1. She’s either uniformed or informed and very rude.
2. The owner shouldn’t have a fit though; it’s not like it’s an all original one of a kind classic that is irreplaceable.

Can you touch the dancers at the strip club? No you cannot. (Well, you technically can. But that’s generally frowned upon.) So don’t touch people’s cars.
